The judges are a big part of the problem right now, but the more overwhelmingly obvious problem with Idol is that most of the show is not focused around the contestants.
I honestly don't care what the judges have to say. I don't want them to tell me who to like I want to see the contestants and connect with them.
They wonder why contestants of this show (and the Voice for that matter) don't do well after they leave. It's because you CAN'T build a fanbase just on their voices. The people who buy the most stuff are the people who want to know every detail about celebrities. In reality, we find out more about Jimmy Iovine than any of the contestants.
