Sorry for the sort of non-sequitur, but I was, er, meditating on the Rolling Stone cover early this morning and it occurred to me that really, that's not a snake. That's a serpent. The Serpent.  It's some serious Garden of Eden-style coiled around the Tree of Life shit.

So, in the creation myth/literal truth of God, the serpent tempts eve to eat ( Read more... )

Of course it was. His name is Adam after all. Putting aside all the other (probably accurate) interpretations of the snake/garden of Eden, they were bound to put him in that situation anyway just because of the name.

Right,it seems sort of obvious but I didn't see it discussed so I thought I'd chat about it and see what other parallels people drew. I am thrilled they did it. Cause it's hot stuff and works on a bunch of levels.

My first thought was:
'That's not he snake I wanted to see on the cover of RS'

When you think about it, it makes sense.

I think they wanted there to be several ways of looking at it. Certainly there seems to be some religious subtext with the snake (probably inspired simply because his name is Adam) but I think the butterfly and snake also repersent the liberation they mention on the cover. The butterfly being him at the start of his life, delicate and non-threatening, and the huge, cool snake being what he has become. It can also repersent both sexes being attracted and him being fine with that or even repersent how on stage he is so commanding (the snake) and yet, off stage, very sweet and humble (the butterfly).

I think I said this when the cover was revealed Tuesday. The snake represents temptation, while the butterfly is a metaphor for how he came out of his shell and is finally able to show his true self.He doesn't have to fake who he is anymore he can be who he has always wanted to be.
