Japan is cool for many reasons (I lived there for a year), but it's also very socially conservative, believe it or not.
As far as gay rights go, that movement is just getting started. In fact, it was only about 15 years ago that the Prime Minister was saying stuff like, "no gays live in Japan" and other crazy-ass stuff.
So, anyway, I don't want to harsh on Japan too much because I really do love it, but it's better to visit than to live there. :)

China/Korea/japan do emphasize on the "pretty boy" look a lot, the androgynous look, but in terms of civil/political rights?
Not so much.
It's rather stunted in that department.
I live in China at the moment and well, until the late 1990s. homosexuality was still labeled as a "mental disorder". :/
