Candidate Draws Criticism For Controversial Ads

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri man who is running for the United States Senate is making national headlines -- not for his political platform, but for his radio campaign ads.

Some people have described the advertisements for candidate Glenn Miller as racist and hateful.

The program director at KMBZ 980 said they had no choice but to run the ads. The spots ran during a conservative talk show on the local station.

"It's time for white men to unite, join together and take back our country," one of the ads hails.

Miller, who is from Springfield, Mo., is running for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Kit Bond.

"We've sit back and allowed the Jews to take over our government, our banks, our media," Miller said in one of the ads. "We've allowed tens of millions of foreign mud people to invade our country."

KMBZ officials said the company is required by law to run political ads. Federal Communications Commission regulations say that a legally qualified candidate for any public office shall be afforded equal opportunities.

But some people say broadcasters should be opting out of the ads.

"Maybe they are looking for ratings," said Devin Slimmer of Kansas City, Mo. "I wouldn't be listening to the radio if they are playing that."

Others, even if they don't agree with the message, agree with freedom of speech.

"The radio station has to uphold that freedom of speech," said Macaela Stephenson of Kansas City, Mo. "It's a slippery slope when they start telling people, 'No, we won't air this, but we will air this.'"

Political science professor Charles Moran at Rockhurst University said the political climate is different now than it was years ago.

There appears to be more anger and fear among voters.

"In both parties, these extreme groups have been formed," Moran said. "You have the tea parties on the Republican side. Moveon.org on the liberals' side. You never had all that stuff to get people all worked up."

Ads like Miller's spark emotions.

"But you don't care, do you whitey? All you care about is satisfying your belly, pocketbook and genitals and watching the coons play ball on television," Miller said in one of the ads.

"I've never seen anything in my lifetime like that," Moran said. "Let's see how many votes Glenn Miller gets."

Other radio stations contacted by KCTV5 to see whether they would play Miller's ads declined to comment.

Miller has legally filed a declaration to run for office with the Missouri Secretary of State. Miller did not return KCTV5's calls on Monday.
