Shinji had been detained at the AMC office past his usual hours by paperwork that he was loath to do. Not that he was ever willing to do paperwork, but he felt like that wasn't really his fault--there was too much of the damned thing and he had to sign off on nearly everything, which made the use and abuse of lieutenants pretty pointless

He did nothing, said nothing as the blond man in the office shifted activities.

Batman trusted that it wouldn't be very long before Hirako would notice his presence, and sure enough, there was that barely-noticeable gesture. A half turn, a slow pivot starting before...

There was impact, but not the kind that Batman had expected. The masked man didn't so much as blink, but he stared at the blond that cursed and held the paddleball in his hand, waiting.

Shinji rubbed the stinging spot between his eyes, swearing some more before tossing the rubbish toy aside. Goddamned paddle ball.

At this point, he heaved a large sigh--not because of his paddle ball misadventures, but because that fucking intruder still hadn't moved and he would have to turn around and see just who the hell it was and goddamn it that took effort and his life was so damned difficult.

Shinji finally swiveled in his chair to ... find himself faced to face with some gay guy wearing tight spandex and pointed ears above his head. He assumed the unconscious clown was a fashion accessory in the gay world.

He raised an eyebrow.

"Ain't gonna get yourself a guy wearin' that shit, man. Try a shirt and a pant. Cotton. Not spandex."

Batman didn't move when Shinji spun in place to face him. In fact, he didn't say a word after the man was done speaking, but what he did do was take a step forward, lift the unconscious clown by the back of the shirt and a grip on the waistband of his trousers, and haul him over the windowsill.

The movement, rough and quite uncaring, sent the thug tumbling over onto the floor and rolling flat onto his back, arms and legs still restrained.

When the Batman finally said something, his voice was harsh and hardened by both pain and ...something else. Undetectable.

"He worked for the Joker. The Vescovo and Monacello family banks were robbed." Behind the mask, the man's face was stiff and unmoving, except for his mouth.

"Tonight."
