Summary: “That’s why Jaejoong had not expected that Junsu would be the one crying in the bathroom after practice had ended.”
In the midst of tens of pretty boys, he stood out the most. Not just because he was good at singing and dancing, but because his soul was in singing and dancing.
From day one, Jaejoong had admired Junsu. Everything Junsu did, every dance step, every chord on the piano, every note that gently floated out of that mouth proudly portrayed his passion. Dripping from every part of his body was the desire of music and a determination to prove himself.
Jaejoong loved that part of him and he got his strength and will to keep going by watching that little ball of sunshine come to training every day for the past year with that smile on his face.
Jaejoong had only been in SM entertainment for a year but he had heard from many of the boys that Junsu had been training for 5 years. To persevere for 5 years was not an easy thing; Jaejoong could tell Junsu was strong, it radiated from his presence.
That’s why Jaejoong had not expected that Junsu would be the one crying in the bathroom after practice had ended.
That day, he stayed back a little later in the practice studio after all the trainees had gone home. He knew he wasn’t too good with his dance moves yet and he wanted so much to improve and become the best in everything. After a whole hour of trying to get hips to move a certain way and then back again, Jaejoong sat on the wooden floor and stared himself down in the mirror in front of him.
Why can’t you move a bit more like that Junsu kid? Why are you such a…a failure.
Annoyed and disappointed in himself, he stood up and went to the bathroom to wash his face. The hallways were deserted expect for a few distant voices that Jaejoong didn’t bother with. He opened the door to the bathroom and heard a sharp intake of breath, followed by muffled sniffles.
He wasn’t going to meddle, but that breath sounded too familiar. Jaejoong knew that breath. He thought it was kind of scary that he knew that breath. He didn’t realize the he’d been listening to it that closely to be able to recognize it.
Now most people would say that Jaejoong was cold and heartless, maybe it was because of the way his face was shaped and his eyebrows. But in reality, he was sensitive; living with eight sisters did that do a guy. He knew he had to help whoever it was.
It was coming from the stall in the far corner, Jaejoong approached it and brought his knuckles up to rap on the stall door and then froze. Instead he decided to talk through the door, in case he was wrong about who it was.
He cleared his throat, “Excuse me, err, are you okay? Do you need any help?”
There was no answer from the boy on the other side of the door.
“I’m, uh, I’m Kim Jaejoong, I won’t interfere with your personal matter but if you need anything, anyone to talk to and you find that there’s no one around, come to me ok buddy.”
Jaejoong heard the short breaths again, he was almost too sure they belonged to Kim Junsu. Jaejoong listened very closely when the boy sang, and how could he not when the young boy’s voice was so alluring.
He wanted to call out his name but he was still scared to do so.
He stepped off and stood in front of the mirror, still contemplating what to do.
“H-Hyung?”
Jaejoong snapped his head back, kind of relieved, and walked back to the stall.
“You’re Junsu right?”
“Yea, it’s me hyung” His voice was soft, as if he was still trying to fight back tears.
Jaejoong heard the soft click of the lock and the door swung open, revealing a very nervous Junsu with red eyes sitting on the toilet seat with the lid down and knees up. His face buried in his head which explained to Jaejoong why the usual loud voice was so soft.
Jaejoong stepped into the stall and hesitated for a bit.
Screw it. He thought, and shut the stall door behind him. Despite his comfort level with confined spaces and disgust toward the bathroom floors, he kneeled down next to the younger boy and put his arm on his shoulder.
“Junsu, I know we’re not that close, but you can tell me what’s wrong. Or do you just want me to be here”
“I-I’m tired hyung,” Junsu managed to sputter out between sobs “I’m just so tired of this”
Jaejoong rubbed a hand on his back and one on his hair, softly caressing him in comfort.
“I gave up everything, soccer, school, GIRLS! Everything to join this company! I’m distant from my family because I’m just so tired at the end of the day, and then they keep telling me ‘next year little boy, maybe next time’.” Junsu leaned into Jaejoong’s touches and spoke his heart out. He usually wouldn’t do this, especially with someone he didn’t know that well, but he needed someone right now. “Do you know how hard it is to watch the people who came in this company after me, debut before me?”
“I know Junsu, I know it must be hard for you, but I can tell you’re really into your music. And talent, aish, Junsu do you have the slightest idea of how much talent you have?” Jaejoong lifted Junsu’s head up to meet his eyes and nodded in assurance, smiling at him.
“If I have all this talent then why am I still here?”
“You’re destined to do bigger things, they’re waiting for the right time and the right people to put you with so you live up to your potential, so you get all the things you deserve. And then you’ll be as big as H.O.T, maybe even bigger”
Junsu chuckled, “That’s impossible, hyung”
Jae smiled, “No really, Junsu, you’re just so amazing, and I hope you never lose your sense your wonder”
“Thanks hyung, but what do I do when it’s just getting impossible? I want this so bad, hyung, so so bad, and it’s just too much to handle sometimes”
Jaejoong sighed and tried to think of more inspirational words to say to Junsu but he really, really understood his dilemma and he knew that the only thing there was to do was keep the faith and determination.
Jaejoong took a deep breath, wiped away Junsu’s tears, and said “ When one door closes, another will open, you’re doing everything you can already, you’re doing your best for this, now just promise that you’ll give your fate a fighting chance”
Junsu sniffled and Jaejoong tightened his hold on his hand, “Just promise me that when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, you’ll choose to dance, because damn Junsu, you have the magical soul that belongs with music.”
Junsu’s lip formed a slight smile and a new set of tears filled his eyes. Jaejoong wiped them away and chuckled, “If it means anything Junsu, I really hope you dance”
A smile took over Junsu’s face, the smile that made Jaejoong’s heart flutter. To be able to bring that smile on the boy’s face was a wonder for Jaejoong and he really wanted to keep him smiling forever. Jaejoong felt like he could watch him smile for hours.
And then something took over Jaejoong in that moment. Junsu looked so angelic and although the position wasn’t the most romantic and the timing might not have been right, the ambiance was right, and the emotion was in place.
Jaejoong leaned in and touched Junsu’s lips with his lightly.
Junsu whimpered and jerked, melting into the kiss until he realized what he was doing. He didn’t mean to shove but it just happened that way when his reflexes kicked in.
“What are you doing?” He spat out, eyes wide in shock
Jaejoong wanted to point out that he kissed back but he just stood up and stammered an apology, “S-sorry, Junsu-shi, I shouldn’t have, I’ll, uhh, I’ll just leave now”
Jaejoong turned back and fumbled with the lock on the door.
His cheeks were flushed red and he was cursing himself in his head.
Why did you have to do that? Everything was going fine and you could have been friends with Junsu! And then you just ruined it, I mean, it’s obvious you’re gay but he’s probably so disgusted right now…shit shit shit.
The lock snapped open and Jaejoong was making his way out when Junsu took a hold of his wrist and stopped him.
“Hyung, don’t go”
Jaejoong looked back, Junsu’s cheeks were redder and he still hadn’t come up from his position in a ball, he wasn’t making any eye contact. Jaejoong stopped and turned in towards him again. He helped Junsu stand and used a finger to brush hair out of Junsu’s face.
“It’s alright Junsu-ah, I won’t, I’ll be here for you ok?”
Jaejoong pecked him on the cheek and Junsu’s face turned a brighter shade of red, something Jaejoong didn’t think was possible. Jaejoong tightened his hold on Junsu’s hand and dragged him out of the stall.
Junsu didn’t really look up but squeezed Jae’s hand back.

5 years later, twenty thousand fans filled the dome, each one holding their own red glow stick, chanting their name as loud as they could.
Junsu was all that he ever wished to be; famous, loved, recognized as an amazing talent. And still, he had to move his hand around Yoochun and find Jaejoong’s hand. He squeezed it, nervous as hell.
Jaejoong looked over at him and gave him knowing smile, nodded and whispered “Dance!”
