To be honest, I haven't really heard anything in the news about the flood disaster there. For some reason (maybe geographical proximity location reasons) the news media hasn't harped on this disaster like it did with Haiti. I don't even know when the flooding happened or how bad it is. But as you can suspect, everyone picks and chooses who to help and when. It's sad really.
Well, what you've said is the point of my post really. You haven't heard much about it, even though 14 million people are currently affected. Is this Pakistan disaster media-unfriendly in the US because of 9/11, because any other disaster usually gets lots of TV coverage? Interestingly, when you look at the 2004 Tsunami money donations, which was also post 9/11 .. this didn't seem to be so affected. Is this because, although Indonesia, (which was most affected is a muslim country), but Thailand, Sri Lanka and India aren't, there was less of the terroristic associations?? Anyway, it interests me!
I just looked it up and it happened while I was still in SF, where tv news was limited. But still, the coverage of the aftermath in Haiti was longer than this.
I know you don't follow me on facebook but I did post the DEC link on 24th August and I too saw no response to it from any of my friends on there. I would like to think or at least hope that if the US media had given this disaster the coverage it deserved the result would be different. Sadly even the best of people are unlikely to donate unless the images and reports on right there in front of them.
You were good for trying to bring it to people's notice then. I saw that one person on my FB posted something about it finally last night. She's in Peru where a disaster there didn't get much attention either. Maybe we are all beginning to suffer from compassion fatigue. Watching the news last night was heart-breaking. Seeing a doctor going out to buy simple medicine with his own money to keep children alive. I think the Pakistanis themselves are sceptical about aid money getting through to where it's needed and not being creamed off by corrupt officials. Sigh. They say it will take 2-3 months for the flood water to recede properly, meanwhile tent cities.
