That would explain the arc over Iceland, but it seems too dense overall, and wouldn't explain the yellow dots in random parts of the ocean. Also, whatever it is mostly skips Australia and skips Japan even more, while being very US/Eurocentric, but not confined to land...

It's the middle of the night in Japan/Australia in this snapshot, hence the relative lack of traffic there.

I kind of cheated - the ITA Software lobby in Kendall Square has a near exact version of that map updated in realtime, and I saw it a few weeks ago. :)
