So, Katsucon was this past weekend, and something amazingly cool happened.
Phil & Kaja Foglio (creators of
Girl Genius, among other things) were guests there. They've been doing geek comics since the 1970's, and have been nominated for a couple of Eisners -- the comics industry equivilent of the Oscars. They're that good. I, being a huge fan of the strip, was naturally gleeful over their being there. So, Friday afternoon, I headed down to the dealers' room to get them to (hopefully) sign a book. I was wearing the official "Geeks Next Door"
Doom [Heart] Kitty t-shirt, which comes into play later.
Anyway, Kaja is sitting there as I go over to the booth, and I ask her for an autograph. She signs the book, and we start making a little small talk (read: I'm going on about how much I love their work and how cool it is to get to meet her). She says "I'm glad; I thought you were coming over to say something because I was looking at your shirt." I tell her that it's from the webcomic I help write. And she replies, "I knew I'd seen that before! You write that comic?"
I was agog, to say the least. Someone that well-known in the webcomics community knows about our little strip?! I stammer out that "Um, yes, I write/edit." Kaja then blows my mind by telling me that she and Phil read the strip, and think it's really funny. THEY LIKE OUR COMIC? THEY FIND IT FUNNY?!!!
HOLY SH1T!
Apparently, Kaja remembered me from the
Dr. Doom series of strips. Which goes to prove that Dr. Doom is comedy gold. And it only got cooler when I got to meet Phil, and he confirmed that he likes the strip. They actually came over to Jessi's table in Artist's Alley and talked with us for a long while, a couple of times over the weekend.
Seriously, though, it was an incredible sort of moment. Two people who, for many years, have been doing what Jessi & I just got into, gave us approval. It really just feels good, and made me realize that this comic thing? It's not just our little pet project that only friends and family are going to read. It's out there for the world, and it just got vindicated, big time.
I mean, damn. That's cool.
