Interestingly, I've heard doctors advise people to take up cycling to improve their bum knees, since it's non-weight-bearing exercise that builds up the muscles around it. (Could be different types of bum knees, though.)
I think the keys are to make sure your bike is adjusted properly (seat height and tilt, etc), and to practice good shifting. Any bike shop worth its salt can help you with the former - I recommend FJ Rogers in Florence for a local one. You can also probably find lots of resources for this online.
For the latter, I just recently read this interesting article on shifting. (Ok, I skimmed it, but I did print it to read later!)
Hopefully that'll help! No one should have to give up biking. :(
I'll check on the fit with that bike shop. Thanks. I'll read the article, too. Double thanks. :)
I took a few days off from riding. My knees still hurt, but not quite as badly. I rode again yesterday, and ouch. :(
It may also be due to my packing on the weight (on my body, not the bike). My ankles usually flare up when I gain weight. I'm surprised they haven't yet. (Knock on wood.) Maybe my knees do, too.
