I'm so glad to hear your son is doing so much better in a private school (why am I not surprised?).

"One of the things we told kids was that if you see injustice and racism - or bullying - and you are a bystander, then you are part of the problem."

This is sooo true.

What slays me is the no tolerance policies at school...I would think the kids defending themselves would also be in trouble.

The majority of teachers HAVE to see what is going on. Maybe if they drew attention to the bullies and singled them out in front of their peers and informed other teachers? I wonder if this would help.

I have been tormented, including by a teacher (who was later found to be insane and transferred to teach IPI kids--the seventies, whoa. I did my best to convince Zor she should tell if she sees it going on. Then when it came around to her turn in the victim barrel, she (and others who were also being bullied) told the (elementary school) principal. His response? In front of the entire cafeteria, including the perpetrators: "Get used to it. That's how life is."

When the fur settled, he left and went to some other district (lucky them.) Unrelated, but worrisome, our district now has a rule that parents aren't allowed in the buildings unless we're buzzed in. (In other words, everyone knows we're coming so they can straighten up and fly right.) This is to keep the kids safe from school shooters. Who's supposed to keep them safe from the other kids and the staff I do not know.

Yeah, this is such an enlightened age.

It's like they're going through the motions. But what are they really DOING to keep our kids safe from EACH OTHER?

Vastly overreacting to things like zombie stories with students as zombie chow, but other than that, darn little as far as I can tell.
