But at the same time, she had to be a lot closer than NEAR the tracks. That's stupid for a hearing person with an iPod. Heck, people get hit when they do hear the train coming.

Stopped falling into the all-too-common assumption that the disabled are less intelligent about the time I got my second set of teeth. Was thoroughly disabused, in fact.
Why do people not draw the obvious corollary? There's no rule that says they're any more intelligent than average, either. Nope, the media plays not upon idiocy, nor even upon (so much) the tragedy, but rather, in all the headlines I've seen, that she was fidgeting with a bit of distractile tech at the time.
Yeesh.
Anyhow, Rory's been threatening to come 'round for a visit either soon, or in May. I figured now'd be a good time to snag a phone number from you so I can hall in the event he gives no warning first, and I need to scramble you and anyone else I can for some impromptu fun. Kick me en e-mail: circumbendibus, on gmail.

Yeah... hearing impaired, texting, and 16 inches from the track. Any combination of these would've ended up the same.
It's hilarious (read: stupid) that the articles point out that the train did sound its horn and that she "didn't respond," as if that were a surpise.
Sigh.
