Icon Tutorial 001

Mar 29, 2006 16:10

My first tutorial ever! I've never done an icon tutorial before so bare with me if it's a little confusing.
tomoe_butterfly requested a tutorial of a Gilmore Girls icon I posted last week and I swear I tried to figure out how I had made it but all my efforts were useless, so I hope you can find this tutorial at least a bit useful instead.
Here it goes:

->

STEP #1
Start with this base. The screencap was a little blurry so I went to Filter>Sharpen and then Edit>Fade to 50% You don't need to do all that again so let's move on.
STEP #2
Duplicate the base, desaturate it and set it to Screen 100%
STEP #3
Find a texture you like (I'm using one of Tre's), resize it if it's too big. Paste it on top of the previous layers and erase some of it with a soft round 65px brush.
STEP #4
Copy everything merged and paste. Desaturate this new layer and set it to Soft Light 100%

STEP #5
Add a new layer on top of everything and fill it with a gradient from #C9D19C to #AF9B7A. Layer mode Color Burn 75%

STEP #6
Another new layer with #CB680D to #770B08. Layer mode Exclusion 50%

STEP #7
Another one, #AA9075 to #C3C591. Layer mode Color Burn 50%
STEP #8
Copy the desaturated layer from Step #4, paste it on top of everything else and set it to Soft Light 50%
STEP #9
Now the text, the font is South Point.
"THIS" 18pt #3A5A972, "FIRE" 22pt #C3EEDE.
Finally add some tiny text, copy everything merged (play with the contrast and brightness a bit if you want) and you're done.
Feel free to ask me any questions and show me what you come up with :)
