"femme as a genderqueer identity that someone almost transitions into because it's different from just being a straight feminine woman"--that is what I usually think of as femme. Being consciously feminine, acknowledging that it is a performance.
I don't really know if #1 is true; it's a pretty big claim. It is true in my personal life, but where I live there is a lack of butches and masculine-presenting queer women in general
The quote about San Francisco reminded me of an interview I read with a queer author from San Francisco. She says, "The queer and trans communities in San Francisco, at least in the past, fetishized queer Jewish femmes. I mean, the community fetishizes everything, Jewish femmes is one of those things. I got pegged as a Jewish femme (even though I don't identify as femme) and got to enjoy certain attention because of that." http://www.jewcy.com/post/thea_hillman_heart_and_sex
1. The archetype of the strong female has been my experience with the women in my family and with women I am close friends with and in community with, but not all of them are femme. I know plenty of Jewish high-femme's, low-maintenance femme's, butches, andro, etc. all of whom do/could identify with the strong female archetype.
2. I strongly disagree with the comparison of femme to JAP. I think the term "JAP" is oppressive, sexist, misogynist and anti-Semitic.
