Bancroft.

Whenever a star like Anne Bancroft dies, it forces you to compare today's Hollywood to the Hollywood of yore. I really wish it wouldn't.

Here's an old LJ entry about meeting her for about 30 exceedingly cool, glamorous seconds.

Sigh. And to think future generations of comics and thespians will never know such awe, since ain't too many of those truly classy and gracious Hollywood denizens around anymore.

True dat. Most of the celebs I most admire these days are indie filmmkaers and musicians, and it's just not quite the same. The air of royalty's missing. Yeah, and a lot of that was manufactured and often didn't hold up to scrutiny (though by all accounts Bancroft really was a great lady), but maybe that's the thing, you know? We were all willing to suspend disbelief back then. Now we're jaded about politicans and celebrities and anyone with any sort of power. It's obviously good in a lot of ways because we're perhaps less likely to be hoodwinked. But are we also less likely to dream?

(this message is from me, skampy. i refuse to sign up for live journal just so that i can leave non-anonymous comments. grr.)

in ms. bancroft's honor, i've taken it upon myself to carry on the legend of the mrs. robinson name. it is, afterall, my last name as well. and as i quickly approach the ripe old age of 30, i've decided to start trolling the ucla campus during freshman initiation week in hopes of seducing a handsome young co-ed. wish me luck.

anne, this one's for you. xoxo.

I met her too! And her husband.

Well, sort of. This was a few years ago. They were eating at the next table. When we left, Mel smiled at us which gave my ex courage to introduce ourselves to them. I was mortified and mostly just blushed & waved. Mel was very nice. Ann seemed a bit put out, though.
