He hadn’t known when he’d told Veronica all those years ago that their love was epic, their story epic, that it would involve wars and span continents. But it had. Which just made him feel like he’d been right all those years ago. A young naïve, teenager, barely out of high school.

If you’d asked him then, there is no way he would have said his dream was to join the military, he would have scoffed at taking orders at the idea of following rules and regulations. The boy who loved the spotlight, who enjoyed being a sort of celebrity by proximity, giving up the hustle and bustle of the parties and the night clubs, would never have predicted that he would trade it in for a small quiet town in France. But he was glad that he had eventually, that he had grown up, that he had let go of some of his anger and feelings of betrayal.

Besides, this town would never really be quiet. He smirked as he watched Veronica. He loved her then. And he loved her now. He loved the way she quietly considered things. He loved her anger. He loved that she had managed to move beyond who she was in high school too. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t be able to be here with him now.

He watched her as her hands wrapped around the mug and she took a drink. Some of that quiet considering. Contemplation. She wasn’t expecting him. Not today. And he was glad that he could still surprise her.

He watched the children buzzing around her and smiled. If she hadn’t been able to move past her all consuming desire to find justice, then he was sure that their children, Keith and Victor wouldn’t be here now either. And though they’d been unplanned, he couldn’t imagine life without them now. He’d never truly been able to imagine a life without her. There was a lot to be said for growing up.

He saw the children pocket something from the scooter and was pleased to get to see her fire before making his presence known.

As he heard his two sons agree to be Optimus Prime’s protectors, he cleared his throat. His two sons leaped at him and he caught them up in a hug, kissing each of their temples as they prattled on and on about their very important job to keep Optimus safe.

As he let them go, he moved towards Veronica. “Surprise,” he said softly, he had made it home from his last deployment a day early. And she wrapped her arms around him as he pulled her in for a kiss.

Yes, there was a lot to be said about growing up.
