Title: You Hang Up
Author: onabearskinrug
Character/Pairing: Ten/Rose, Jack, and Jackie
Rating: PG for a bit of suggestive dialogue
Summary: Rose and the Doctor have to spend a night apart. Fluff ensues.
Disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who. Any recognizable characters belong to the BBC.
Author's Notes: This was my warm-up today for writing the next chapter of Defenders. Pretty much originated with something timelord1 said. Doesn't everything, though? So, yeah, this happened. Just a short little excuse for fluff. Enjoy!

Rose was most decidedly not amused. Apparently the TARDIS heating system was on the fritz, so the Doctor had taken them back to London so Rose could have a warm place to sleep. His body temperature was lower, he explained to her, so he and Jack would be fine to stay and fix things. Rose would not have fared so well.

This was how she ended up snuggled under her bright pink duvet, clutching a pillow to her chest and wishing it was someone else. Rose wasn’t used to being in bed alone anymore, and she missed her Doctor terribly. They had only recently admitted their feelings to one another, and it couldn’t have been more than a few hours since he’d left her on Jackie’s doorstep with a searing kiss and a promise to work as quickly as possible. Still, she ached for him.

As if sensing her thoughts, her mobile began loudly singing In Your Eyes from her nightstand. Grinning, she practically bounced on the mattress as she retrieved the phone and answered the call.

“You changed your ringer again, Doctor?” Rose teased, her tongue poking out from between her teeth.

“Well, I can’t very well stand beneath your window with a boom box, Rose. This is the next best thing. How’s your evening?”

“Long,” Rose answered, settling against her pillows. “How’s the TARDIS?”

The Doctor sighed, and she could practically see him pushing his hands through his hair in frustration. “Cold. I had forgotten the last time I repaired the thermoregulators, I used chewing gum and duct tape. I sent Jack out for some proper tools, thought I’d ring you up.”

“I miss you,” Rose blurted out.

She could hear the smile in his voice when he responded. “I miss you too, love.”

“Why don’t you come up? Not like you can do much while Jack is out.”

“You very well know the answer to that, Rose Tyler,” he replied, his voice low and enticing. Rose shivered. “If I come up there, I will not be able to leave. And then what would we do?”

“I can think of a few things,” Rose teased back.

“Oh, I’ve no doubt. Which is why we are stopping the conversation here. How’s your mum? What disparaging remarks did she have about me today?”

Rose laughed, and the pair settled into easy conversation. They talked about Jackie and her current beau, the gorgeous vehicle Mickey was working to restore, and her planned visit with her best girlfriends. The Doctor regaled her with tales of where he planned on taking her next, places with golden sunsets and purple sand and mountains that sway in the breeze.

It was close to an hour before Rose began yawning. The Doctor chuckled. “My little human needs her sleep.”

“Oh, shut up.”

“Jack just got back anyway. The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can come get you.”

“Is that Rose? Rose! Hi, Rose!” She giggled at Jack’s voice in the background.

“Hi, Jack!” she answered. “Hurry up, yeah?”

“As quickly as we can,” the Doctor promised. “I love you, Rose,” he added quietly.

“AWWWWWW!”

Rose rolled her eyes at Jack’s reaction. “I love you, too, Doctor. Even if you’re not done, come up for breakfast in the morning, yeah?”

“Wild Daleks couldn’t keep me away.”

“Okay…”

“Okay…”

They sat on the phone, silently, for several moments.

“One of us has to hang up, Doctor.”

Rose could imagine his goofy grin. Her heart clenched. “You hang up first!”

Rose laughed. “No, you hang up first!”

“You hang up!”

“No, you!”

“Oh, for the love of all that’s bloody holy!” Jackie screeched from the next room. “Would you two just get off the phone already? You’re giving me a bleedin’ toothache over here!”

Rose blushed, but her heart warmed at the Doctor’s guffaws. “Oh, Rose, have I mentioned how much I adore you?”

“Once or twice,” she teased. “Tell Jack I said goodnight. I’ll see you two in the morning.”

“Yes, you will,” he added. “Good night, my Rose.”

“’Night, my Doctor,” she replied, finally clicking off the phone and sighing happily.

Rose snuggled under her duvet and closed her eyes, positive she would fall asleep with a huge, goofy grin on her face.
