a book you might find interesting is 'everything in its path' by kai erickson. it's an anthropological study of an appalachian community destroyed by a flood from a negligently-managed coal slurry pond. I'm not sure I follow all the characterizations he makes about appalachian psychology, but it's interesting and sympathetic and reveals a lot about what life in the area is like especially in times of great stress.
Sounds very interesting. One of my sisters would probably like it, too. She's very concerned with the politics surrounding the coal industry, and how it's raped not only some of the mountains, but also the people within.
