It wasn't until James came along that the idea was cemented in Jen's mind: her sister is having an affair. Every time they talked about children, Heather would firmly state she was done with one, but four years ago, she made that announcement. But Jen never suspected who the man could be; she'd just gone on believing he was some nameless, ( Read more... )

He shifts anxiously. The only time the Director has that look on her face and worse, in her eyes, is when the boss has done something to piss her off. When things get tense between the two of them, he always gets anxious. It's like if his parents were divorced and he were the kid in the middle. "Yes, Director?" He's sure his voice just caught in his throat.

"I need you to track Agent Gibbs' whereabouts for the last 6 days. Then, I want you to compare them with Heather Shepard's whereabouts for the same time period," she says with a chill in her voice. She knows he noticed the name, but she doesn't give him even the slightest indication of whether or not this is a relation. Then she adds, "This is to stay between us."

Again he gulps. He hates the whole "this is to stay between us" BS because it never stays quiet, no matter how much planning and scheming goes into it. And given what Tony had been bragging about downstairs and the last name of the woman in question, it's clear something is going on that goes far beyond the boss sneaking out of a meeting or two. But he's also learned not to argue with that look in the director's eyes.

He hesitates on acknowledging the order, but only because he doesn't feel right prying into his boss' private life. Who the boss sleeps with is none of his, or the director's, business. "Yes, ma'am." He wants to have her do it herself, but also likes his job and something tells him that saying no is a fireable offense.

It's another one of her crusades and for a brief moment, she almost thinks he's going to flat out refuse. But she knows he wants to stay employed and the moment resolves itself when he answers in the affirmative.

Of course she thinks it's her business; it affects her as much as it does the two involved. Anybody else who gets caught in the mess isn't her concern. And if McGee knows what's best for him, he'll make damn sure this doesn't find its way outside her office, but Jen's not holding her breath on that one.

When she realizes he's still standing there, her expression shifts into an expectant one. Unless he has something else to say, she's done with him for now.
