My bandom essay, part two.

Huh. Turns out 7000 words wasn't quite accurate. It's closer to 8050. Give or take.

The problem with making a list like this is that I’m not always looking for the same things in music that other people are.

Okay. I’m rarely looking for the same things. Toy pianos, for instance, do not rate highly on most of the Best Of lists I’ve seen. (I don’ ( Read more... )

Hee. You're welcome? Good to know somebody likes my really ridiculously long attempt to put this stuff together.

I think . . . you are awesome and I will continue to subscribe to your newsletter. :D I don't think I'll ever be in bandom (it's the RPS-not-extending-from-a-fiction-fandom thing, or a the fact that I'm not a major music person, or something, anyhow meh) But! I like your music posts. And it may be something that I already have most of these tunes (The Panic! and MCR mostly), since before I delurked and even knew bandom was a thing. They are good, even if I don't fan them the same way.

So, yay! \o/

*snaffles playlist to get the stuff I don't already have*

Yeah, that's totally understandable. And this is less a 'join bandom, here's your tinhat' post than it is an effort to get people to at least give the music a chance. I can't ask for more than that.

For me to even start to reply to this post in the way it deserves, I'd have to make a post of my own, I just have so many things to say. I'll hold back for right now and just agree with you whole-heartedly about The Black Parade.

I go back and forth on how much I love "Welcome to the Black Parade," (and oh my goodness your restraint at not putting "House of Wolves" in the mix!) but I consider it the overture of The Black Parade. It shifts through so many of the musical themes that are expanded on in other songs and I just love that album a ridiculous amount.

*g* It's a lot for one post, I know. I considered splitting out the bands, but I didn't want to spam my f-list, you know?

God, YES. I'm still itching to put everything back in, but. I did claim to be able to choose.

I consider it the overture of The Black Parade.

It really is, and one of the things I want to talk about when I do the post is the choice to place it in the middle of the album. Because narratively, that makes sense. But musically, it's decidedly unorthodox, and I think that's one of the reasons that the album is a postmodern take on rock opera, rather than a retread of the big glam rock classics.

I may have been thinking about this for a while. Maybe.

This is a well thought out and well written analysis of these bands and I agree whole-heartedly with everything (except for the burning out of FOB ( ... )

Argh. More later; thanks for that catch. The sentence was revised, and I didn't see that I left the name that way.

Right, okay. Fixed poor Jon Walker's name.

except for the burning out of FOB

It's not that I want it to happen, mind you. Just that with a writing partnership that complex and close, when things go wrong they go very, very wrong.

I just like to see how they've grown up and I'm a sucker for 80s movies references which are so blatant on the first album.

Me too, and if this had been a different post (I did have a specific audience in mind, which made a big difference in my choices) I'd have spent some time on them. In a way, this isn't my Favorite Tracks list. It's a balance of the stuff I just can't leave out, and the things I think are the most accessible for people who aren't big on punk/hardcore/emocore.

I think that was part of the goal for Gerard, maybe not intentionally, but the album has the ingrediants for all other cult-type media.I think it was intentional; there's a reason the uniforms are modeled from Sgt. Pepper and that the concept is so closely tied to death and redemption. I like that they're playing with that, ( ... )

I think Pete would try too hard to keep Patrick so close that things may end up burning in flames, but as you said, Patrick and Joe grew up in this band, they don't know much else. I think if the band ever did go their separate ways they would be so accustomed to seeing each other eventually things would be resolved. Pete also seems to be the kind of person, despite horrible situations, to try and stay friends with everyone he's met (see: Jeanae and Chris).

It's a balance of the stuff I just can't leave out, and the things I think are the most accessible for people who aren't big on punk/hardcore/emocore.Yeah, I understand. It's actually a really good election of what the bands are now and how they've changed from recent albums. I'm also glad you incorporated singles because I know a lot of people just skim over them because they are so overplayed half the time, but they were chosen as singles to represent the band and they do ( ... )

I'm here via... someone, I stalk so many bandom people it's impossible to remember, especially when I'm twenty tabs in and reading hours after I clicked. Anyway, I loved this post so much and I sympathize with your difficulty in cutting down your 14 hour playlist. In three months I've gone from a playlist that consisted of "Take Over, The Break's Over" on repeat for eight hours to one that just has entire albums stacked back to back. I tried to whittle it down to a more manageable size but there was no point -- I never play it because I can't stand missing out on any songs.

Hi! And yeah, it was tough to narrow it down, especially because it isn't really even my Best Of list. It's a weird mix of stuff I really love and stuff that I thought would appeal to the people I started out trying to convince, and that resulted in a slightly uneven collection.

Plus I kept getting caught up in TBP and looking up an hour later to find that the list had grown again.
