So my father called me tonight. When I found out it was him, I was steeled for bad news - usually my mother is the one that calls me, and his sister - my favorite aunt - has had first breast cancer, then lung cancer, for a while now. But no, he just wanted to talk about stuff

A note on language usage: for people in your father's generation, "they've set a date" is often synonymous with "they've become formally engaged". So you might not be as far behind the curve on the news as you thought.

Oh, actually, that was poor wording on my part - what he actually said made it clear that they'd been engaged since Christmas or so, and that they just formally decided on a date relatively recently. Sorry about that.
