I finally caught up! Missed last week's episodes 😆 and I watched all of them in one go this weekend (ended up with a massive headache lmao, this is how I know I'm getting old 🥲). I kinda had an epiphany where I realised I would have liked the show more if it was mainly about Yi-Jin, his riches to rags story during the 90's economic turmoil, and him building himself back up again, and if there was more focus on the newsroom/workplace dynamics, and that specific time in Korean history. I really do love Tae-ri as Hee-Do, but I can't seem to connect to her story/the fencing angle lol.
Buuuut I'll continue watching cause I'm curious to see where their story will go when they're 21 and 25.
Also, I just realised Nam Joo-hyuk has to enlist this year, no?? 🥲

yes but we're not going to talk about it 😔 i know you don't like song kang but he will be going too like i need the army to stop taking so many of my faves from me this year
i think he still has to enlist and i can’t think of a famous actor around that age who has already who knows
tbh you were right to avoid it the first two eps were fine but it’s gotten progressively worse already and it’s only ep 6 the pacing and plot is all over the place. ep 6 was literally like let’s break up cause i need to work through my insecurities about being cheated on, song kangs characters dad shows up and asks minyoungs character for money, minyoungs characters mother ‘almost dies’ but actually just collapses and is fine almost immediately after, minyoungs character talks about her dad dying and tells song kangs character not to hate his dad too much then suggests they live together. theyve been dating like 2 weeks? the plot is a whole mess
in these episodes, i especially was touched by the scenes between yijin and his younger brother, when his younger brother pretended like he didn't know him - heartbreaking. i think those scenes show the effects of the imf crisis really well. i'm happy yijin got a job although it felt a bit sudden to me!
my mind is still not at ease re: yijin and heedo's relationship, like the phone calls for example felt more than just friends or brother/sister. also i was so confused when she just gave him that sword! apparently it was hers but i thought she was just handing out random practice swords from the school lol
for the rest especially episode 6 made me laugh a lot like the scene with the dogs?? and heedo being sooo cringey with her 3-day bf who mansplains her how to use cutlery??? i've seen it all
also it's so amazing how well kim taeri is pulling off playing a teen!!

the tone of the phone calls were absolutely romantic and i didn't like his convo with his mother about finding the right person in life either when it was so obviously supposed to remind us of his connection to hee do.
i did feel slightly better about it when him meeting her new "boyfriend" didnt have any weird overtones or jealousy or lingering looks or whatever but like i said in my comment below i think i'm jumping through hoops to justify some of this just cause i like the cast and a lot of the other elements of the drama.

i did enjoy a lot about these episodes but the romantic vibes so early on are just killing my enjoyment i would be absolutely obsessed with this drama if it wasn't for the age gap. i like the drama and cast so much i feel like i keep trying to justify the romantic tones to myself like oh but it didn't cross this line so i can still interpret it as platonic to give my mind peace but ugh i shouldn't be doing or having to do that. like if only they could have time skipped quicker 😭
that aside i enjoyed njh with dogs very much and i like the scenes between hee do and yu rim. the scene between yu jin and his brother was done really well and felt really gutting to watch.
the fencing is a little hard to be invested in right now especially when they sort of time skip and don't show her progressively getting better much these last two episodes. also what was the scene with the random white man in the restaurant? i feel like there was another scene felt really random but i can't remember what it was now.
i love this series so much, i think the writing for hee do and yijin's relationship is absolutely beautifully. i see no point in being concerned about a 4yr age gap LOL, i feel like ppl keep glossing over the fact that yijin is YOUNG. he's been forced to grow up fast due to his family circumstances, but beyond that he is also young and unsure and making mistakes and trying to figure himself out
