In this series I want to go through groups that are gone, but not forgotten. I will go from debut till disbandment or [indefinite] hiatus, remembering the time we had together and look back on their highs and lows.
Living legends. I got emotional going through this post OP, will use it as my playlist next week during work ;;;
When they announced that Lonely would be their last release and that they would disband after the performances it made it almost impossible for me to enjoy the stages, but at the same time I watched everything live or as soon as I could (rare for me) and almost cried through their fun medley stages lololol. Then maybe a week after the last performance I came to peace with it, it was a perfect ending and since then they've stayed close and supported each other, so it was probably also the ending they wanted. So few can say that.
I got into Sistar just when Hyolyn Dyed her hair black the first time (Sistar19’s GNAAL). She is my favorite and none of the other idols I like comes close. There’s something sort of too honest about her and she is kind of tacky (her taste in fashion). Plus she low key used to be a Beyonce impersonator and was the only idol to actually do a decent job at her uptempos
( ... )
your opinions are so spot on and really funny lmfao. i'm desperate crossing my fingers and hoping that hyolyn comes back full force soon like she did in 2018. That was such an amazing year to be a fan of hers.
And I agree 2018 was her year. Not just musically but she seemed so much more engaged on stage. What made 2018 for me was how active she was on the festival circuit (which likely isn’t gonna be a thing for awhile). Like she changed up her set a couple of times and was in her bag when it came to See Sea. I know fans were mad she wasn’t doing music shows but considering what we have heard about them, she likely made up for it doing a ton of festival performances AND the street performances.
UGH To Do List kills me. Part of why I ended up paying for Spotify was to listen to it on repeat. Her other solo stuff is great but To Do List I go back to every time.
Mte on her style though. I see her and Hwasa going down the more provocative American style and it doesn't seem to translate well to the Korean audience the way that IU/Sunmi/Suzy do. But hey, she's honest to the musical and aesthetic style that she feels suits her best so props to her.
Bora... I remember Invincible Youth being hilarious and Bora being awesome on the show and other varieties. Her musical skill was lacking in comparison to Hyolyn and Soyu but like. Those two are quality solo/duet acts and also, Bora has charisma in spades.
Dasom... I hear she's become a pretty good actress, which was her niche in the group to begin with... So I guess she's fulfilling it?
Ma Boy was my first entry to Sistar and what a good song it was. Then came So Cool which was iconic for Bora's raps (and there was the incident in that end of year performance where Hyolyn and Bora had wardrobe malfunctions with the song).
Sistar showed that even with a small fanbase, you can achieve great success, and they were really at the top during their peak. although their songs kinda got similar with Touch My Body and Shake It, they were still addictive songs. But I Like That period really showed that the girls were out of idol life, so I guess it's better for them to end their idol career. at least there's the friendship remaining, which rumours have been plaguing them for years over discord and unhappiness over Hyolyn's "dominance".
glad to see Dasom blooming. She used to be so awkward at the start and only having 1-2 lines per song, to being in the chorus for their songs.
OP, wanted to add in the masterpiece that was Erase in 2014! (and maybe the disappointment that was Paradise comeback)
thanks for the addition! i forgot to add both this collab and the Paradise comeback (shame on me! i had a feeling i missed something) i'll edit the post, thanks! <3
Erase is still THAT song! I wish it was more of a hit. (Too bad Jooyoung actually hated having to dance for this, he said it didn't feel like himself.)
ugh sister, my first gg. when i was diving into kpop and heard hyolyn's voice in alone? i knew something was up! and then I saw that she had a solo album and basically sang most of their songs, I instantly fell for her stage presence and smooth vocals.
Touch My Body was my first comeback and honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. That was an iconic promotional period.
I'm desperately waiting for another year of hyolyn (a la 2013, 2018). I'm not sure what's been going on with her, but I hope she's okay. Lead Me is to this day my favorite b-side, it still brings such a smile to my face. And the I Like That era had their best styling, periodt.
im still confused why Starship started sistar's comeback schedule like a few weeks before the contracts had to be resigned. I remember they were supposed to comeback with 'beautiful monster'. the song title is a little iffy to be considering monsta x released 'beautiful' before they announced this one
