Aug 16, 2018 00:31

While browsing Youtube late at night I came across a video by user SinB Ssi, which listed several songs by various artists with more than questionable lyrics, such as sexism, body shaming or cheating. I'm re-posting some of the songs mentioned in the video, more are at the source. This post should be a friendly reminder to not blindly sing along to ( Read more... )

taeyang, body image, infinite, dia, hyomin, b1a4, jessi, sexism, jyp, omona discussion, bts

Those Infinite lyrics are just straight up bad. Who thought that was a good idea?

not to be That DIA Stan but honestly, the dissonance between the cheery music and the message of "my friend's boyfriend" is exactly why I love it so much. it's a joyful, silly, rambunctious song about stealing your friend's bf how can you not love that.
same with songs like fx's "shadow", the whole point is that they're playing a character who is creepy. criticizing the lyrics for being creepy seems to be missing the point.
songs like twice's cheer up or girl's day's female president are another matter. they seem to be earnest with their problematic messages ("girls shouldn't be forward with their crushes" and "female empowerment boils down to being able to kiss a guy" respectively)

Female President is a lame song and with everything that went down with their female president, yeahhh that song is definitely not aging well lol

+1 I kinda like it when the songs are creepy and they acknowledge or play off the creepiness in some way.

For example, JYP is obviously creepy in Who's Your Mama and the MV is pretty much an extended exploration of how much of a creep he is being, but at the same time, he's not speaking for others and the presentation is pretty idiosyncratic. I like the line "it's hard to find pants that fit" because it doesn't really fit into a generic fantasy about women ???? It kinda takes you out of fantasy mode and makes the song seem more of an exploration of one weirdo's psyche.

In general, the songs I have more of a problem with are more coded-generic, like B1A4's Goodnight. Now that's a poisonous song.

TBH as a person whose hips are larger than my waist (although my measurements and the measurements listed off in the video are similar, I recognize this becomes even more pronounced in larger women) I literally say out loud "preach!" Every time that line is said. You know what, it *is* hard to find pants that fit right. Thank you JYP for acknowledging my struggle.

I feel like this is JYP acknowledging his inner creep and I can't really find too much fault with that. It's fairly innocuous, it's a lighthearted bop that was semi popular and no one will remember in 5 years.

regarding body image, one more chance by csjh dana and sunday makes me wish i never learnt korean.

"They said Adam's rib was taken out?
I'm the one who needs mine removed, though
My big-boned waist won't do like this
Don't laugh, I said I'm being serious"

some people have argued that the song's lyrics are actually criticising standards of beauty but i don't see it tbh!!!

i always felt that the verses were them being critical because they sang it in such faux-aegyo voices compared to their deeper voices for the chorus where they sing about being independent. also they do talk about stealing adams ribs and flying away with them at the end of the song lol

really? one more chance's lyrics are SO over the top, they've always read as satirical to me.

"i don't like soju because the glass is small, it makes my face look bigger" like am i supposed to take this seriously LMAO.. the song's hilarious.

i see the satire in some of the verses. however the song still ends with "even if i have to remove this damned big rib bone, i'll fly" which makes me feel like the... persona (?? lol) is still fixated on her weight and appearance. that's my interpretation though.

perhaps if we see the song as a dialogue or conversation? it might make more sense idk.
