November Challenge: Magic Practice

Nov 02, 2006 07:55

For our November challenge, we've decided to do something a little different.

Because so many of you are busy with NaNoWriMo and the holiday fic/art exchanges this month, we thought it might be easier to cooperate than compete. As a result, instead of our usual challenge format, we'll be hosting a drabble/sketch-a-day challenge this month. Those of you working on NaNo novels or holiday exchange fics or art can use the prompts as a warm-up exercise before getting to the real stuff; those of you who aren't can use them as general practice or do longer, more detailed fic or art based on them.

How It Will Work

Every morning this month, one of our mods or scouts will post a prompt for the day. Prompts may be words, images, quotes, lyrics, or anything else. You can write a drabble, draw a sketch, or do an extended fic or art project based on the prompt. As usual, all characters, genres, styles, etc. are welcome; the only requirement is that the fic or art must be gen.

All members and watchers are welcome to submit prompt ideas for the challenge here.

We recognize that most of you didn't sign up for multiple posts a day when you started watching omniocular and we don't want to destroy anyone's f-lists, so we're asking both members and non-members to post all work based on the prompts in the comments to the prompt post (with one exception discussed below). Here is a breakdown:

Drabbles and Other Short Fiction (up to the 4,300 character limit for comments): Post the full fic in the comments, including a title (if applicable), rating, and any warnings in the subject line. (If you would prefer to post the fic to your own journal and provide a link in comments, that's fine too.)

Longer fiction: Post the fic to your journal and post a link to it in the comments with typical header information.

All art: For the benefit of those of our watchers on dial-up, please post a link to all sketches and artwork in the comments with a rating, any warnings, and any other information you'd like to include.

Members: You are welcome to post longer fics of 1,000 words or more and any non-sketch artwork based on prompts directly to the community, as long as you feel they meet the community's standards of quality, spelling, grammar, etc. Otherwise, please follow the guidelines above.

We encourage everyone to leave feedback in comments, and we will provide links to all previous prompts in each day's post.

The first prompt is:

“The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.” -- Eden Phillpotts

omniocular is still accepting applications for new scouts. More information here.
