“Why are you doing this?” Morgana had let the last of her tears shed. Her hands were in her lap and her throat was sore from holding sobs. Instead, she only allowed tears to fall.

“It's my duty, Morgana.” Leon said from a distance away, sitting on a stool. They were in his home, usually a comfort for Morgana but not tonight.

She scoffed, “Duty? To pledge love to some whore just for the sake of reproducing.”

Angrily, “How dare you call my future wife a whore. No one knows what you did while in captivity.”

Morgana quickly stood and slapped him across the cheek. “The only man who has seen my truest form is you, Leon of Camelot.” She returned to her seat and they sat in silence. He did not bother rubbing the area where she had hit him.

Finally, “I'm sorry.” His voice was soft, “I didn't mean to say something about your captivity. It's just...” He got up and kneeled before her, grasping her hands in his, “I believed you to be gone. Forever, away from me and I couldn't bear it. Then she came along and I felt better. It's been almost a year since we started courting and it's time for us to marry.”

“And why can't we?” She knew the answer. She was the king's war and would be married off to some duke or king whenever Uther needed an ally. She hated the man with a passion.

“You deserve the finest of everything you want,” She caught the tiny glimpse he made of his small house, “And I can't grant you that.”

“All I want is a man who loves me,” She placed her hand over his reddened cheek. He had grown a thicker beard than she last remembered, “And I have that with you. We could live in a cave for the rest of our lives and it wouldn't matter because we'll be together.”

“Morgana, we can't.” Leon pleaded with her to understand. The night patrol passed by the window signaling it was time for her to leave. Silently, she stood, tied her cloak around her, and made her way to the castle.

Leon dreamed of all his memories with Morgana-- everything he did not share with the court. The first time he had suspected she took a mild interest in him was the night he woke to someone pounding on his front door. She was in her cloak and what he presumed to be a nightgown. Her eyes were frantic with worry as she took in her surroundings, looking for the source of her worry. She had told him she had a nightmare about him and wanted to make sure everything was okay.

He reassured her of such but she demanded on checking in every night. Eventually, he would anticipate her visits during the day and found spare blankets for her during the winter months. She would not stay long but they would fill their time with chatter. They made sure to keep their laughter to a minimum for fear of the neighbors hearing.

One night, they sat by the fire he built when she began to yawn. He insisted on taking her back to the castle but she lay down on the floor next to the fire with a blanket on top of her. He did not think it was any way for a lady to behave but did not pester her. After a few minutes, she asked him to join her.

She bunched her cloak into a pillow for him and grabbed his arm for a pillow. Lying on their sides, facing the fire, Leon did not realize until then how much he loved seeing Morgana at night even if it was for a few laughs.

He felt a shiver run down his spine from the cold and she urged for them to share the blanket. She pulled him closer so her back and his chest were barely a centimeter apart. She positioned the blanket on them and pulled his arm around her waist as she returned to her original position.

He loved that memory. That night in its entirety was beautiful. They fell asleep next to the fire. When he awoke, she was gone but when he saw her with Gwen, she was delighted in saying she had never gotten more restful sleep.

He replayed the night's events and wished he had mentioned his engagement to her in private instead of in front of all of court. She looked sick and her eyes darted to him as if recognizing something she did not know was true until that moment. Surprisingly, she looked for Gaius and more sadness reached her beautiful features. He wanted to hold her like that one night but he could not.

“Leon.” A voice he recognized and loved spoke from shadows.

An image appeared before his eyes. Morgana dressed in a simple wedding gown, Gwen beside her as her witness. Uther was the officiant and Arthur was his own witness.

He directed his attention to Morgana as Uther said the words, “You may kiss your bride.” Leon had never felt a more sensational moment than hearing Morgana was his wife and he could kiss her freely in court.

The scene changed and the pair were in Morgana's chambers. She was already lying on the bed, naked, waiting for him. It was a glorious sight he wanted to cherish before he took her once more in his arms and they could as loud and carefree as they wanted to be.

Leon woke from his dreams and still felt it could never be.
