Tonks was in St Mungo's, waiting impatiently for her wounds to heal. She had too much time on her hands and her thoughts would drift to what had happened. Sirius was dead and she could have prevented it. She had been fighting Bellatrix and that foul cousin of hers got away to kill a more dear cousin.
Everyone said it wasn't her fault that Sirius had died. This would have comforted her if it weren't for the obvious absence of his best friend. Remus hadn't shown up to St Mungo's since she was admitted. Part of her was wondering if all the flirting and very obvious attraction was gone in the blink of an eye due to Sirius' death.
She didn't want this to be the case but as each tick of the clock went by, she grew increasingly frustrated with him. Finally, he showed up but there wasn't a note of happiness in his features.
“Took you long enough.” She stated with venom in her tone.
“Dora...” He whispered.
“No. Don't call me that. It's Tonks from now on.”
“I'm sorry I didn't come sooner.”
She couldn't stop herself, “Why didn't you?”
He shrugged and moved to the end of her bed, “I didn't know what to call myself.” She gave him a look before he continued, “What are we?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Ar we together or just participate in mindless flirting?”
“We do more than flirt, Remus.” She allowed herself a coy smile.
“You know what I mean.” He sounded exasperated.
“Are you asking whether or not to call yourself my boyfriend?” He nodded. “Well...yeah. I thought we always were together.”
Remus seemed a little relieved but there was still something on his mind. “We shouldn't see each other anymore.” His words were so monotone that Tonks asked him to repeat it.
“Wait, what?” She nearly jumped out of her bed but he coaxed her into a sitting position. “Why did yu just ask about all that together stuff if you were just going to break up with me?”
“Tonks, you don't understand.”
“What don't I understand, Remus?” She asked angrily.
“I'm too old--”
“Only thirteen years--”
“Too poor--”
“Don't care--”
“Too dangerous with my affliction.”
“I'm an Auror. I can handle anything.”
“I'm more harmful than a few Death Eaters.”
She took his hands and pulled him toward her. “Please, don't do this.”
He gave her a kiss on her forehead and pulled away, “I hope you feel better, Tonks.” And he left.
It would be months and many conversations before some sense was knocked into both their heads.
