Lately I have had a feeling of something missing in facebook, something that I remember was there in Livejournal. In the last few years, we’ve all been ovewhelmed by social media, specifically facebook, and to lesser extents twitter, instagram, etc. What did we do before that

I don't know about your friends page, but mine used to be full of "Which Hogwarts house are you" type memes. All that noise seemed to move to FaceSpace.
My friends page didn't have a huge number of "text on pictures" memes, but I think that's largely because meme generator sites and infographic porn production have become way more popular in the Facebook-dominant age. I think this is partly because Facebook and Twitter limit the number of characters you can type (or that they'll show), but you can fill a whole image with words and they'll display them prominently.
My current rule of thumb is that if I think I'll ever want to refer back to something I posted, it belongs on LiveJournal, which has revolutionary features like tags and a calendar.
