I'm fast approaching the point where the boys are going to be reunited - probably still a couple of days of writing to get to that point, but I'm definitely in the section where it's going to occur!
The good-bad news is that that means that my fic is gonna be close to the 15k mark before I can actually start with significant plot.
It's going to be big isn't it? Here's hoping I can finish in time!
I'm not too worried about the length - it's more the consequence of it - we've only got ~6 weeks until May and I'm really starting to worry that I'll be sitting on 30k+ of words at that point but still be miles off the ending I want.
I suppose if it came to it, I could always write a 'mid-season finale'-style ending and write the second arc for the 2016 BB...
Or you know, you could throw in the midseason finale ending and then just keep on writing... it's not like you can't add to or expand your fic between the first draft deadline and posting.
So, I need advice. I'm thinking of doing a fic about a real-life reality competition show, and I'm wondering how different I need to make the details so it doesn't feel like a straight-up rehash of that season. I was thinking about making the mini-challenges different and keeping the main challenges the same. The main challenges really utilized the setting (Texas and Vancouver) so well that I don't want to change them. I was also thinking of keeping some of the challenge entries the same, especially in the team challenges. Is that "plagiarism"? I'm not real familiar with the products that make up the challenges, so I don't feel like I know enough to make things up out of whole cloth. So does that seem kosher, or do I need to commit to a $&!+ton of research?
Hmm, without knowing more about your story (RPS, SPN, etc.) and what you're keeping changing about the reality show, it's hard to say. My bigger concerns would be that thisncould run afoul of some of the rules against crossovers, sonifnyou're trying to avoid a crossover, you would likely need to change some elements of reality show. But then agaIn, that depends on so many things.
This is exactly the kind of plot-related/chalenge-rules-implicating question you should ask wendy about. You can have an offline discussion (through PM or email) and get tue answers you need from the horse's mouth so to speak (she is the bigbang mod after all!) and be confident that whatever you work out is totally okay for the bigbang.
Make sense? Don't twist yourself in knots, ask Wendy!
Oooh, that's something I hadn't thought about. I know I've seen other fics that did similar things, but I don't think any of them were written for Big Bang. I guess I could kind of "file the serial numbers off," so to speak, if it does end up counting as a crossover. I'll talk to Wendy and see what she thinks.
Hard to say - personally, I'd say you would probably want to change enough stuff that it feels 'inspired' by that season rather than a direct copy. Maybe try swapping out challenges for those from other seasons/shows? Obviously, I don't know specifics, but that's probably the way to go if you don't want to have to spend too much time worrying about if the challenges 'work'.
Totally would've missed the check-in, so... thank you! ;)
I'm making good progress, thanks to the challenge, and I'm currently at 9,800 words, give or take. It's a good place to be, I'm happy with where everything is going. :)
Well, I've actually started my edits, surprised myself there, because I tend to procrastinate. I'm starting slow, just making sure that I at least open the project at least once a day and do *something*, even if it's not a lot. Less anxiety that way ;) And I'm finding that once I'm in there and have oriented myself, I'm doing more than I expected. So YAY!
When I wrote it, I hadn't seen any of the current season, so I wrote in a very ambiguous timeline, because I had no idea how the end of last season was going to be resolved (I avoid all spoilers). Now that I've seen the episodes aired so far I'm going to adjust it to fit within the current season. I'll feel less 'lost', if that makes any sense.
And hopefully, I'll get this stage of edits (where I sort out continuity and plot holes and stuff) will be done by the end of the month.
For the moment, I'm done going around in circles writing lists and alternatives in an outline.
I'm back at working in the fic itself, and I think that finally, finally, I have figured out a way to get the story where I want it to go. Yay!
The challenge is really helping. I'm pushing myself to write more than my minimum number of words, because I really want to finish the first draft as soon as possible to begin the edits and rewriting, which I suspect is going to take even more time than writing the first draft...
Not really... it's more of a canon AU, and I feel I have to think through and justify each and every small decision I make for the fic. I wish I'd have gone for a casefic; it'd be far less complicated. XD
Oh man, as someone who is also working on a canon AU, I totally feel you. I am having tonrewatch everything... even crappy episodes that were universally panned when they came out. (Yes, I've had to rewatch Bugs and Route 666 to sort out my plot.) It's been a fun romp down nostalgia road, but man is it complex. Every teeny tiny decision get's scrutinized from every angle.
Right now I have some bits stalled because I can't decide how much of a jerkass John is in this AU. (If anyone wants to brainstorm John Winchester's motivations and reactions with me, drop me a PM.)
