I've actually been in ranting mode about this for weeks since I first heard it. To me the real gauge of american soccer will be the day that they can go to the Azteca and win a qualifying game, this has always to me been like the holy grail of the sport for the USMNT. Now because of this it will probably never happen.

Ffff agreed
I just hope this change in qualifying won't be permanent. I guess there's always the chance that it could be changed again in the future, but damn

And I hate to say it, but some of these little countries don't have a chance in the World Cup. It sounds really noble to "level the playing field" a bit so someone else other than USA, Mexico and maybe Costa Rica can qualify, but like I said, ultimately it's pointless since they'll be crushed in the group stage anyway

mte. it's such a step backward in the race to meet that goal.

US-Mexico games are the highlight of WCQ. Friendlies are fun, but it's not the same as a WCQ between these two teams. It is just absurd to me that Blazer & Warner are still in power. But then again, it really shouldn't surprise me.

Related, the WCQ tournament for next year's Women's World Cup almost ensures US and Mexico meet in the final by placing them in opposite groups. I understand CONCACAF wants to have their two best teams do well, which is why it makes this new qualifying format for the men so ridiculous.

I've never had an issue with Chuck Blazer to be honest, in fact i've often felt he seems like one of the few people at concacaf who I should detest with all my being. The same can't be said about Jack Warner, nothing and i mean nothing would go further to bettering the state of soccer in the concacaf region than being able to get rid of jack warner

Warner obviously wins the corrupt douchebag contest, hands down. My problem with Blazer is that he seems ok with this sort of thing, which I just don't understand. Maybe it's because I've been reading too much about FIFA's problems, but I just feel that most FIFA members are not concerned with actually fixing anything. I need to get my hands on Andrew Jennings' book, and then I can rant some more.

This blows. Yes, there are still the possible friendlies, but it won't be the same. Beating Mexico in a friendly won't bring the same satisfaction as beating them in a WCQ game.

And friendlies in the Azteca? Most MEX/USA friendlies are in the US, when was the last time Mexico hosted the USA in Estadio Azteca for a friendly? I believe the last time Mexico tried to host the US for a friendly it ended up being canceled/moved to the US for financial reasons I believe??

This just BLOWS. Mexico and the United States won't benefit from this.

As soon as I got to the part with Sunil Gulati, I knew he was going to start talking about friendlies.

ugh. I'm happy that it will help the Caribbean nations but FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
like, honestly, this is horrible for both teams in terms of qualifying. more so us, I think. like the article mentions, playing against the "lesser" teams repeatedly will help them get better, but not us.

the fact that USSF is okay with it seems to be the worst part
