DAY 80, Later Afternoon

Gisela gathered up gardening tools and a collection of flowers and herbs to plant once the plot was cleaned up. She made sure everything was in order in the infirmary, and then dragged all of the supplies out to the garden. She didn’t see Bert anywhere, and figured he was still changing into another set of clothes

Bert changed into his sweats and went to find Gisela. It wasn't too long until he found her and saw her shove a shovel into the ground. He jogged over and offered his help in his own way. "Pretty girls like you shouldn't be gettin' all dirty in the dirt. Lemme shovel that all out for ya. Just tell me what you want me to dig."

She was either going to have to get used to Bert saying girls shouldn't do certain things, or train him not to say such things... She supposed he was just trying to be nice, in his own way, though, so she smiled and handed the shovel over. She was going to get dirty in the dirt no matter what. "We need to get the bush out before we can do anything else. But the roots run pretty deep, so we'll have to dig them out. I don't want them damaged. It doesn't look like it burned too long, and might bloom again with some care. I can send it to a nursery."

"Hm. Ok, no problem." He was used to grunt work from time to time (mandatory community service helped with that too) so digging out a bush wasn't so bad. The shovel moved through the dirt with ease until he hit roots. He just had to keep digging around them since she said she wanted to keep it.

The roots not only went down pretty far, but seemed to spread out pretty good too. He grunted every few shovels full of dirt and while he had a nice wide space around it dug out, his dirt pile was also rather profound. "Damn. This one seems stubborn." He grabbed the bush but all it did was wiggle slightly.

"A bush after my own heart." Gisela got down on her knees and bowed under the bush to yank up some of the roots from the loose soil with her hands. She shoved at the base, but there wasn't much leverage from her position. "Want to try again?"
