PhD's are free, but the work isn't as applied. Not sure if it's your gig or not, but you don't have to pay tuition, and you get a stipend (usually tiny). Bigger stipends are available, but you usually have to pay something into the system research-wise to be a real candidate, or be a hot-shot undergrad, in which case, they don't expect as much from you
( ... )
hmm ... i obvoiusly haven't followed your education very closely, but I though you were getting an MS in comp sci when you had classes with certain parents of mine?
No, that was for the CS "cognate discipline" for my MS in Technical and Scientific Communication. If I'd had good sense I probably would have changed to the MS in CS. But nooooo, I wanted to get a cross-discipline Masters, which sounds awesome and is apparantly worth appoximately the calories it takes to type.
The company I work for is looking for network folks. They have no problems with telecommuting, and really want people on the BofA account, so even if you did have to drive in to work you could get office space at the BofA building in Norfolk.
Get Cisco certified and I can pull some strings. My bosses are totally unimpressed with everyone they've been interviewing. All you'd probably need would be a CCNA and me vouching for you. Not sure of salary range, but I'd bet you start at 50K minimum. I do have on call work, but only once every seventeen weeks. I bitch about my job, but it could be much worse.
That's a heck of a lot more than I'm making now. I am totally taking you up on this. I'm going to start studying for my CCNA...now! Should have done it a long time ago.
Statistically 20 applications for jobs and being rejected for those 20 jobs is about par for the course. This is the number of jobs that job-network members request unemployed job seekers in Australia to apply for in one day.....!!
BTW: I am now contracting for a company and an agency who consistently rejected previous applications.
The nature of IT work is changing. The Australian Computer Society ran a seminar on this. "IT" is no longer a glamour occupation.
