Gen. Colin Powell on "Meet the Press" last Sunday:

"I'm also troubled by... not what Senator McCain says but what members of the party say and it is permitted to be said. Such things as, 'well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.' Well, the correct answer is he is not a Muslim, he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really ( Read more... )

It was such a beautiful, powerful message. Shame on McCain for not heeding Powell's warning. I just read an article the other day about a Muslim-American Republican who was jumping the GOP ship because he felt that the party no longer respected his existence. Sad.

I'm so proud of Gen Powell for speaking up. The photo essay was quite touching, I had viewed the whole thing on Lance's LJ a while back.

And I'm so glad that you just posted this, because it makes me feel less alone. I just got really hammered very hard tonight by someone who has professed to be my friend for 17 years, who has professed to love me but since I put up an Anti-Palin photo on my myspace decided I needed to be slammed. A part of his quote supporting Palin, "Anything to get the atheist-socialist heathen dumocrats out of office"

He has been a good friend for a long time so I never say nasty things about Christians or Republicans or paint them all with some wide brush so this really hurt. I'm just in tears.

I don't which one is scarier: the level of overt hate spewing from the McCain-Palin campaign, or that so many people take to it so easily. It's sad to see that even with as many great strides as have been made, there is still a great deal of prejudice in this country--against race, religion, gender...

Good point. I like Colin Powell. Someone who's not afraid to stand up for what he believes in.
