Yesterday, 15/09/2011 at roughly 18.30 marked the world premiere of episode one, series 4 of BBC’s Merlin. This is the first time they have filmed the content of the show on 35mm film and we were lucky enough to experience this preview in full surround sound, giving the episode a real cinematic feel. Directed by Alice Troughton and written by Julian Jones, Merlin is back with a bigger, darker and better feel. There is a perfect balance between humour and seriousness, keeping the audience captivated right until the very end.

Episode 1, Revival of the Witch, Part 1, takes us on an emotional rollercoaster; one moment there were the sounds of laughter and the next there were shouts of terror, followed by numerous moments of almost unbearable suspense and finally, there were tears. Lots of them.

Series 4 is visually breathtaking, with stunning colours and the step up from last series with the special effects is almost unbelievable- everything in single scene looks sharper, clearer and everything about it is just beautiful.

As always, there are strong performances from Colin Morgan [Merlin], who continues to make everyone go ‘wow!’ and ‘aww,’ in equal measure. He brings the character to life and emits so much emotion that one can’t help but empathise with his character. Bradley James [Arthur] also impresses the audience with a heart wrenching and passionate performance, interacting beautifully with Angel Coulby [Gwen] and Anthony Head [Uther.] Katie McGrath is back as Morgana and she is back with a vengeance. Effortlessly elegant, she is out to bring Camelot to its knees.

Although Merlin continues to be a family show, younger children should approach this series with caution- there are some parts that had even the older members of the audience on the edge of their seats, and it is already clear that we are in for an epic journey of friendship and betrayal, love and hate and most importantly: secrets, and magic.

here are three photos of Colin Morgan and Katie McGrath looking radiant:
