Nice setup dukephotos October 26 2010, 05:41:19 UTC
And even though its not partiularly realistic, I always liked this Teppo Jutsu video:

You know, in case you get attacked by AK weilding green melons and need to switch uppers in the middle of a firefight. LOL But at least its beautifully filmed.

seems kinda silly to be swapping uppers and not just having having the whole kit ready to go... as you say, not realistic :)

might as well have the PSE crossbow in another backpack!

I don't really see a practical use for it, but being cool is enough for some people. For medium/large game, I'd rather have something with more typical rifle velocities like an AR-10 in 308Win. I'm not sure what you gain to offset the loss of usable range and ability to buy ammo almost anywhere.

What advantage does it have for urban sniping? Suppressor use with subsonic ammo?

500-600gr subsonics are pretty serious. 458 SOCOM i sbasically penetration king in 223 sized platform.

Some of the more exotic bullets from specialty bullet makers make it even more interesting - Lehigh bullets, for example, make a .458 caliber 528grn VLD. Probably too long to feed from a magazine, but in a short heavy barreled bolt action with a big suppressor?

Urban sniping. That's exactly it. Subsonic and suppressed! It's getting just about the maximum terminal effect out of a subsonic, suppressed AR platform. The terminal ballistics of 300 Whisper and similar cartridges just don't compare. If a bullet has to go slow, it might as well be big. Very big. Although I would wonder how it compares to a suppressed AR in .45 ACP, in a practical sense.

Why not just use .450 Marlin?.....TC

450 Marlin won't fit in AR-15(will fit in an AR-10 though - AR15barrels.com sells barrels)

458 Socom - why? anonymous October 27 2010, 16:14:12 UTC
Here in Indiana a legal rifle cartridge for deer must be at least 35 caliber and have a case no longer than 1.625 inches (same as 357 Maximum basically). The 458 SOCOM meets this requirement and therefore can be used to hunt deer. It is one of the highest powered cartridges that can be used and for AR fans allows use of that rifle.

I hunt with a single shot H&R in 357 Max however since I'm not concerened much with firepower.
