I don't fully agree or disagree.

If you want a dog for protection, get a dog from protection lines and train them for it...and acknowledge this will ensure the dog cannot be treated like a normal pet again.

Otherwise, use dogs as early warning systems and have a plan in place to ensure their safety. If one has multiple people in the house at all times, someone needs to be a designated dog wrangler. Make sure the dog's collar isn't a breakaway. Make sure the dog has excellent recall and understands the word "Quiet."

In either case, a LOT of training needs to happen...for people and dogs.

Dogs are also not all courageous. The one that Nicole Brown Simpson had was tested by animal-behavior experts after her murder, and they said that, while it was a very nice dog, it was too cowardly even to defend itself, much less its mistress or her friend.

That's why I specified going to a breeder who actually breeds specifically for that purpose. Most dogs aren't good candidates for protection. The vast majority of breeds would fail miserably when presented with a threatening stranger. And that's OK - most breeds aren't bred for it. Nicole Simpson's dog was an Akita, which was originally bred for hunting...and in the US, they've been softened significantly to be tolerable house pets.
