Same way they've always been used: around a corner or as group therapy. For example, if all your family members are upstairs and your door just got kicked in, a nice Mill's bomb rolled down to greet them would discourage loitering.

having very limited experience with hand grenade use, i would say that thats the last thing you wanna do to your house
unless you're completely sure your floor is not going to be penetrated by fragments

better have a reliable shotgun .. or if you're really crazy, wire your porch with claymores

Fragments have limited penetration due to their shape and relatively low velocity. Definitely less than most bullets.
