They're diving birds that eat fish. Somewhat bizarrely, for a bird that spends so much time in water, they don't have specialized oil glands for waterproofing their feathers like ducks have. So, when they go swimming, their feathers become waterlogged.
That's why you see them standing around on logs a lot of the time, often with their wings outstretched. They're drying themselves off.
