I see Carolyn (at least in my head canon) as this extremely soft, kind...descreet woman but there's a lot of bitterness and steelly survivor instincts under the surface- kind of like AR himself. She's in the marriage for the money just as much as for the man (I mean by 1920, she'd heard his promises for 10 years)...
...and maybe wants to be just naive and innocent enough to believe he will go legit one day. Or that she can 'save him'
