Guru

Hadn't really heard much about Guru - the new Mani Ratnam movie, other than the bare bones- it was written and directed by Mani Ratnam, and was based on Dhirubhai Ambani's life, before I saw it. Didn't expect anything particularly radical just a soemwhat nuanced film, which sadly this is not..Mani's made much better movies, and I'm sure will make ( Read more... )

The free market is never as unambiguously good as economic libertarians make it out to be. A major issue is that the risk of capital is often borne by those least able to bear it. The problem is, no one seems to be coming up with an effective alternative.

I think I'lk watch this movie, though I will be disappointed by overly simplistic treatment of the subject.

Hear, hear.. The long march to radicalism begins with a single sceptical step.. :-P

Had to stop by and read :)

I suspect though that in the end this is a film that folks would like or dislike based on their politics..
Not me. I do not have any strong political leanings .... so I saw this movie more as a story than anything else. Street smart go-getter from a village managing to suck and bully his way to the top. I too wish the details could be less vague .... the way things are, I found it difficult to form an opinion on the main character. Cut the songs and give me details I say !

Vidya Balan had a strange role .... each frame she was in seemed to imply that her story was important but her story never really got told.

I am more than aware of Bollywoods shortcomings .... there is a whole spectrum between black and white. Snobs though, deserve no mercy :)
