... Sounds like hell. ... Also, sounds like he must've been a pretty good person. [For all she knew, the circumstances could have involved drugs or gang warfare or god knew what, but if he died trying to protect his own... well, that was something she could respect.]

I mean, he was so serious and I think he would have married his work if he could- he was that kind of guy, you know? And horrible luck with women. But he was softening up.
He was learning to forgive a bit better, and he and Del got closer- she used to be intimidated by him. And a lot of the work he did helped other people, reached out a lot.
[Now her eyes are definitely wet, but she's still smiling.] He was stupid and stubborn a lot of the time and even right at the end when I was sitting with him, he never.. never...

[The funny thing was, for somebody who talked so much smack and didn't much open up to others without putting up a bit of a fight first, Heather was a pretty good listener.]
[In this case, maybe it's that deja vu feeling. Or maybe it's just because she really can relate.]
[And the fact that Dee is smiling has more than earned Heather's respect. She's sort of smiling, too-- in a sad way. Obviously she's never even met the guy Dee's talking about, but...]
