Tobias Fornell was now a free, albeit considerably poorer man. The months spent arguing
and sleeping on the couch were over. His divorce from Diane was final.

So why wasn’t he happier? Why was he standing hesitantly on Gibbs’s doorstep with a bucket of chicken and a bottle of bourbon…afraid to go in?

“Because damn it, Gibbs was right” Fornell said out loud and he turned to leave.

No, this was stupid. He, Fornell had faced terrorists with bombs, snipers with rifles, and crazed serial killers. He was not going to let his best friend’s ‘I told you so’ cow him now.

Squaring his shoulders he reached out and turned the doorknob that he knew was unlocked and moved into the house.

He made his way to the basement. The house was quiet, but he knew Gibbs was in the basement. If Leroy Jethro Gibbs wasn’t at his desk or in the field, he was working on his boat

As the FBI agent walked down the stairs a disembodied voice called out,
“Was expecting you Fornell. There are glasses on the workbench. Pour.”

Fornell smiled and walked over to the workbench. He saw two glasses waiting there. Well, they were ‘glasses’ in the broadest sense of the word: Gibbs heavy coffee mug and a glass jar with a few nuts and bolts inside.

He dumped out the contents and filled each with a healthy measure of bourbon.

A few minutes later, Gibbs emerged from beneath the boat. He accepted the proffered glass and took a sip.

“Damn, you brought the good stuff.”

“Yeah, I decided I deserved it."

Fornell sat down on the nearby sawhorse and said, “Am I supposed to feel like this? After a divorce…I mean..”

Gibbs tilted his head slightly to the side and responded. “How do you feel?”

Fornell stared into his glass. “Happy and relieved that it is finally over. Pleased that I got a pretty good visitation schedule with Emily…but. something else…I feel ashamed…I failed. Jethro…I have never not made something work before.”

Gibbs regarded his friend. “It takes two to make a divorce, Tobias.”

“What?”

“Extra-Crispy.” the gray-haired agent said as he dug into the bucket of chicken. “ I mean,” he continued with a mouth full of the colonel’s finest. “If marriage is a 50/50 deal, then it follows that a divorce is too. But in Diane’s case, I would reckon it is more 90/10.”

Fornell sighed, unconvinced.

Gibbs picked up a biscuit and tossed it at him. “Hey Tobias…eat”

The FBI agent caught the projectile. He looked up and said,” You ever going to get married again, Jethro?”

“Nah, I have had too many already” he replied as he devoured another piece of chicken.

Fornell sat staring into the amber liquid.

Gibbs wiped his hands on a rag.. He rummaged in a nearby drawer and found a clean sweatshirt.

“Here, Fornell. You can either sit and talk or sit and eat…but you just can’t sit. Put this on and help me on the boat.”

Tobias put down his biscuit and took the shirt.

“Hey I brought dinner, I shouldn’t have to work.”

Still, he removed his jacket and laid it carefully on the sawhorse. He removed his tie and dress shirt.

As he pulled his tee shirt over his head, he felt eyes staring at him.

Gibbs was gazing as his nude torso in an odd but appreciative way.

Feeling suddenly quite vulnerable, the FBI agent quickly pulled on the sweatshirt.

When he looked over at his friend, Gibbs was calmly fitting a piece of paper to the sander.

“Here” he said. “I hope you remember how to use it right.”

Tobias took the sander and began to smooth the hull in the designated spot.
As he settled into the repetitive motion, he could begin to see the allure of building a boat by hand. It was relaxing. It was cathartic. His mind slowly stopped cycling around all the unpleasant things that were going on. For a short time the entire world was simple…just sanding …

Suddenly he felt a presence behind him and a hand over his…it was Gibbs.

“Okay Tobias, I appreciate dedication to duty, but you have been in the same spot for fifteen minutes and I can barely see a mark. Here…push like this.” He said and he leaned against the FBI agent and slowly move the man’s arm up and down the hull..

“Slow deep strokes…slow deep strokes.” Gibbs said quietly

Startled at first, Fornell again relaxed into the rhythmic motion…until he felt something hard nudging against his leg. At first he thought ‘why would Gibbs be carrying his weapon in the house?’ But then he realized that the gray haired agent was getting aroused.

Fornell suppressed the urge to giggle at the thought of his ex’s ex getting aroused sanding a boat…until he realized that he was getting aroused too.

Fornell’s ears began to burnwith embarassment. He drew a breath of air to say something but instead inhaled a mouthful of saw dust and began to choke.

Gibbs backed away to allow the other agent to catch his breath.

After a minute, Fornell was breathing normally and reached out for his glass.

“You know, if I didn’t know better, I would think that you were making a pass at me, Jethro.” he said as he took a sip.

“I am.”

“What the…?’ Fornell managed before he began choking all over again.

Gibbs handed his friend a clean rag.

“Nice going, Tobias.”

The FBI agent regained his composure, “But I thought…”

“Yeah me too. But after three divorces I started thinking that maybe I had been shopping in the wrong stores.”

“But me, Jethro? I’m old and bald and…”

“Handsome, intelligent, and very attractive. I have thought so for a long time.”

“I never knew. Why did you wait so long?”

“I wanted to wait until you were single. I didn’t want Diane to have any more ammunition than the stuff she already made up to use against you.”

Fornell sat on the sawhorse and took a big swig of his bourbon.

He looked up. “This is crazy. You know this’ll never work.”

“Why?”

The FBI agent thought for a moment as he stared into the most beautiful blue eyes that he had ever seen, but never noticed before. “Well for one thing, you are Virgo and I am Cancer.”

Gibbs chuckled and moved closer to his friend. He lifted the shorter man’s chin and kissed him softly.

Fornell’s eyes widened as his stomach did a flip-flop and his knees buckled slightly.

“But I am willing to give it a try.” he said.
