Back to the days of the Darthan Age, thirty thousand years ago in a time which has been brushed over and covered up from history.
It's true that Romal doesn't accomplish much and the story might have proceeded the same if he had not been there. Fair enough. I think it's okay if once in a while the hero is a witness instead of a resolution.
The first part concerns itself largely with introducing the Order of Tel Shai, which is a major part of all the modern canon. It was tempting to make Romal the first knight of Tel Shai, but that felt forced. He was too bitter and mistrustful to undergo long training under the Teachers, or to undertake missions for them.
It's also odd that the townspeople are actively trying to lynch Romal at the beginning of the story. Usually, Humans feared and hated the Mongrel, but only to the point where he was shunned and turned away. I don't know what was going on here that made the situation so extreme. Maybe he started something. He did have a temper and was no meek little lamb
