This lovely drink, which I invented (although it wouldn't surprise me if someone else did, too), looks like the ice cream truck confection and tastes pretty good, especially with good ingredients. It makes a great fourth-of-July drink, but I was making them this weekend as mid-move refreshment, and DH had three of them. Then he said he didn't feel ( Read more... )

It's both good and easy, but not exactly the same in terms of flavoring and coloring effects as the fake stuff. It doesn't work well as a coloring agent, for example, and the flavor is more sophisticated. Adults will probably prefer the homemade stuff, but if you're making Shirley Temples for their usual audience, they may not be as appreciative.

The homemade grenadine is also awesome in soda.

Lately I've developed, out of nowhere, a mad jones for cola. All the time I want one. We don't ordinarily have soda on hand, so this is inconvenient. And I think you may have made the problem worse: Homemade grenadine in a Boylan cola. Yummm.

When I was in college, there was a clear cola called (I think) Canadian Spirit that came in frosted lightbulb-shaped bottles. It was this concoction, which was distinguished from all its imitators in that it actually tasted wonderful, that tripped the whole brief-as-lightning white cola fad. It would be made for your grenadine, if it was indeed still made. But I don't think it is.

Besides, welcome. I admire your writing -- you make me, a luddite so extreme she has no television, want to read about video games. No small feat.
