I seem to be drifting away from the Internet. It's not that I've decided to do so, but I notice it happening. I'll be offline for at least a couple of weeks, starting October twenty-second, for a road trip with scheduled stops in New York, New Jersey and Maryland. I have a feeling that on my way back toward Las Vegas, I'm going to come unstuck ( Read more... )

Time away from the internet is almost always a good thing, but I still like reading your stuff. I look forward to your return if/when you return.

Thankee! For now, I'm still reading and commenting, but much less than a month ago. It's hard to predict the next five weeks, but I'll definitely be missing for the two weeks that follow.

Ooo... you'll be visiting NYC? I'd love to get a cup of coffee.

Actually not: New Paltz, New York; then Piscataway, New Jersey; then Bethesda, Maryland. I don't plan to cross the Hudson. It's tempting to come meet you, but my days in that part of the world are already too tightly scheduled. Thanks for asking!

My friend Antero once said that any genuine spiritual initiation involves an experience of "that which has never occurred to one before and for which one can never truly be prepared."

I find agreement on this with your friend Antero.

I will also add this: It's dramatic to believe that we can never know when or where that experience might occur. But such belief itself is another component of a systemic but specific spiritual path. Actually, the experiences are internal and thus in every moment, in every place, and with every doing. My peculiar belief is that all spiritual roads eventually lead to mindfulness, no matter the practice.

The richness of the next example cannot be underestimated. This man passed his "genuine spiritual initiation." I believe that he did it by Antero's rules. And mine.

Yes.

Great (and adorable) story; thanks for the link!

And of course, MEATBALL!

Nicky,

LOL! Your choice of MEATBALL! was a great example of what I'd written. Thanks for reflecting it back to me so perfectly.

Oh, and at the risk of sounding too Obi-Wan Kenobi-ish, Kim Novak and R. Crumb are "names I haven't heard in a long, long time." Kim was hitting her stride just as I was coming of age (SIGH), as was the inestimable Crumb and Zap (WINK). Wonderful integration!

Best to you and River,
