Keith's concern about torture goes way back.....

While we're waiting for one of our talented techies to covert the "Wait, Wait..." clip to a
more accessible format, here's another gem you may have missed.

It appeared in the form of an article since removed from ESPN's website, and was also
included in the April 30, 2003 episode of COUNTDOWNFrom the transcript, here's Keith -- bless his bide-a- ( Read more... )

One thing that Keith missed was this: When a fish is flopping around out of water, it's because it's panicking from suffocation. Fish need to "breathe" in water, just as we need to breathe air. Taking a fish out of water is like dragging a human underwater...you suffocate, then you die. Painfully.

Keith's concern for the fish is at once justified, and just plain cute. Let's face it, just by looking at him, it wouldn't be surprising to see him out fishing. He's hardly the type you'd expect to see passionately defending the rights of fish to be pain-free, but looks can be deceiving, now, can't they? ;-)

I would love to see video of him saying all this. That would be priceless. Thanks for sharing this. :-)

But wouldn't you assume that a group of scientists with the prestige of the Royal Society had taken
that into account and tested the fish while they were still under water? No, I don't think suffocation
was a factor here. All other variables being equal, there were indications of pain when fish were
injected with pain-inducing substances.

I agree he looks like he could be a fisherman (fishermann). As a specmen, though, he fits the stereo-
type of a liberal so perfectly in other respects that I actually WOULD expect him to stop fishing if he
saw research suggesting he was hurting a defenseless creature! Although admittedly he doesn't always
get it all perfect, I never saw anyone who strove so hard to do the right thing as Keith.

And doesn't that last snarky line sound like it could have been lifted right out of a Special Comment?!!

Sorry I didn't make myself clearer. X_X

I wasn't referring to the test itself. I meant that fishing, itself, involves not just hooking the fish, but putting them in a container to die a slow, painful death from suffocation. Even if you catch a fish with a net, not using a hook at all, it's a horrible way for a living creature to die - that's why it thrashes and flops about. :-(

As for Keith, one of the things I like about him is that he has the heart of a liberal and the cojones of a Republican. (It's a sad fact that too many liberals are wimps, which is why the Left doesn't get as much attention as the batshit-crazy Right.) It's funny that Keith looks as if he'd be Republican, but underneath he's a big softie ( ... )
