i was also kinda pleasantly surprised by Shortbus. I didn't love it, but I thought I'd hate it. The sex was actually pretty nonsexy, but it didn't feel gratuitous or anything.
there were some moments that felt so theatre-school over-the-top that it made me want to crawl away (hello closing song sequence YIKES), but parts of it were kind of touching.
yeah i'd been kinda dreading shortbus since i saw john cameron mitchell's initial appeal in the paper looking for actors. i'd always kinda had it in the back of my mind that i wanted to make a good american film with real sex in it, but i didn't know how it could be pulled off (if the sex is too graphic then it can interrupt/ disrupt the narrative). they actually pulled away from creative porn angles and actually pulled further away than i think they needed to. i watched this movie "lie with me" that had good real sex scenes and while i didn't really like the movie it was in no way the fault of the sex scenes. the script was just flimsy.
workshopped pieces like Shortbus often feel pretentious and overacted but i think this one at least made up for it a bit by having really lovable actors. i just wanted to hug all of them....and then shower and disinfect.
