The bad and the good

Yesterday Katie went to the pediatrician, for her 6 months appointment. Stacey forgot to take the measurements home, but the girl is somewhere around 21.5 lb and 27 inches, and head circumference that is off the charts. Katie got her regular shots, plus two flu shots, poor baby, but there was no noticed ill effects at all.
Anyway, we gave her ( Read more... )

1. Apology: The guilt I feel for this intrusion is mitigated only by the facts that a) this is an open post and b) I am sincerely trying to be helpful
2. Intrusion: Be really careful with Benadryl - it's fine for most people, but there's a sizeable minority in whom it causes bone ache (similar to what you feel during flu and high fever), and/or stomach pain, and/or insomnia, and/or severe paranoidal depression. That's when you eat some to keep off an allergy attack and you realize, fully and without any chance of error, that your whole family, parents and siblings, hate you and try deliberately to wound you. A baby may not be able to express how this makes her feel. Singulair, on the other hand, does not have these side effects.

it's not an intrusion, so no need to apologize.
The problem is that the allergies were completely unexpected, and we were much more worried about her not being able to breathe, than psychosocial side effects :)
Singular is a prescription drug that, by the way, DOES have psychological side effects, and physical ones as well. So it's really just a choice between the two unknowns. No one in Katie's family has ever had a bad reaction to benadryl, so I was pretty calm about it. Also, she very quickly calmed down, stopped itching, and started playing with her feet, so I am pretty sure that she didn't get any weird side effects. However, I will keep an eye out for these kinds of things.

They do tend to be unexpected, and cumulative (which most people don't think about), and generally unpleasant :(
Singular IS a prescription drug, which means you'll talk to the doctor and find out about side effects, and that's a good thing because that would give you an informed choice. From personal experience it's a lot less painful than benadryl - makes me slightly light-headed, but that's about it. It's so much less painful that I still paid for it even when I had no insurance.

You may also want to ask the doctor about epi-pens for later (hopefully you'd never ever need to use one). Good luck :)

Btw, no one in my family ever had a bad reaction to benadryl either. Or food allergies, for that matter.
