Up and Dismay

I finally saw Up last night. I would have seen it last week, except that I decided I wanted to see it in 3D, and all the theaters close to where I live are only showing it in 2D, so seeing it in 3D required a little more planning, and a BART trip to San Francisco. This was my first time seeing a movie in RealD 3D, which is the new digital 3D ( Read more... )

Really? I had the exact opposite experience. I saw it in a smallish theater, sitting way off to the side, and the 3D seemed completely natural. I literally have no memory of noticing the 3D bothering me during the movie, to the point that I have to remind myself that yes, I did see it in 3D.

(Some of the trailers, on the other hand, looked pretty bad. My theory was that animation less susceptible to the bad effects, but maybe it just means I was less sensitive to them.)

Yeah, for what it's worth, I saw it from a fairly optimal distance/angle for me (about three-fourths back, close to center) and found the 3D in no way distracting.

Curious. Maybe I should try seeing something from a little further back. I suppose it's also possible that how much it bothers you has something to do with the frequency response of your eyes, which may vary from person to person.

I haven't seen Up yet, but I saw Bolt and Coraline in 3D. I noticed a little of the ghosting and the noticing the plane of the screen that you're talking about, but it was only marginally distracting. I also felt the 3D marginally enhanced the movie, so overall it was a wash. I'm not going to go out of my way to see movies in 3D in the future, but if my friends feel like shelling out the extra cash for 3D, I'd still come along.

The 3D was less distracting n Coraline than in Bolt, so maybe it does get better as you get used to it over time, or maybe the color balance and pace of that movie was better at minimizing the problems.

I really enjoyed the 3D in Coraline. I saw Up in 2D and didn't feel like I was missing anything.

Up in 3D was much less compelling than, say, Coraline, or Monsters vs Aliens were in 3D. In Up, I just felt like there wasn't any real need for 3D, whereas MvsA had some nice aerial fly-by shots that looked and felt really awesome with the 3D. Little planes whipping by your head is a neat illusion. I also saw MvsA again in 2D, and while it wasn't bad, it also wasn't quite as exciting. Perhaps it was the fact that it was my 2nd viewing thereof....
