Okay, seeing as you are a huge TMNT fan, what show would you recommend to a newbie? *Only just got into the whole thing, and it's all BDQ's fault, no, really*
I recommend avoiding the 87 cartoon for the sake of your sanity, except in bits and pieces taken at your own risk. ;P (seriously, jungle training... in NY.... my brain hurt and I had to stop the DVD) (though I would swear it did get more serious in later seasons, but I can't remember DX)
But do watch the 03 series starting from season 1 and at least through the end of season 4. Ninja Tribunal is good if you don't mind that mystical flavor to your turtles. FF and BTTS could be considered optional except that if you watch BTTS it doesn't make any sense without watching at least the first (second maybe third) and last episode of FF.
Matter of fact this guy has the first five seasons (except for the last two episodes for some reason). Some of the episodes were blocked when I tried to watch them, but he uploads them on rapidshare on his forum (link to the relevant thread) so you could just download those instead of scouring youtube for them, if you're so inclined.

SAINW was incredible - and so totally different to the experiences of the others - but don't forget Good Genes too. Actual plot lead-up to this, and some wonderful angst fodder. :)
I think a Donnie angst-fan must have gotten their hands on the script a couple of times - stuff like this never happens to the others.
And you're right, the whole Donnie "must find Splinter" at the start of BTTS is wonderful.

I grabbed a copy of SAINW from a forum that I listed in a previous comment, just so I could watch it whenever I wanted. (Sadly, I was hoping it would have this fanvid to replace the typical TF opening, but that was not to be). How could I forget Good Genes! Man, I think I actually choked a little bit with that storyline (I was bad and watched 'Adventures in Turtlesitting' and 'Good Genes' before watching the lead-up to them). My problem with SAINW still remains that I didn't cry, but I guess that's to be expected of a kid's show. *sigh*
Donnie's rather unexpected being the angst target, I would honestly expect more angst focused on Raph or Leo (though Mikey would be even less likely as angst-fodder than Don....and now I wanna see some good Mikey angst... how would Mikey have dealt with if he'd been thrown into that future instead of Don... and I'm gonna stop. Too many bunnies as is).
I kinda wish they had focused more on that in BTTS, but again we are faced with TMNT being a kid's show.

I don't blame you watching those two first, given the choice I might've done the same. I was in the weird position for awhile of having seasons 1, 2 and 4 but not 3, and I knew I was missing some good stuff but couldn't believe it when I finally got 3.
It is a kids show, but that's what fanfic's for, right? SAINW was scary (for Donnie) but I think GG was scarier - at least there's a chance he could change things to prevent SAINW, but with GG he was reliant on the others and _Bishop_ to cure him and he didn't even know it. It must've been a shock coming out of that one.
I really don't know that the writers will ever give us any real Mikey angst. Leo = leader; Donnie = geek; Raph = broody; but Mikey = fun/goofy and they have a hard time pulling him away from that. The closest they get is making him slightly serious for short periods. Again, fanfic is the way. :D
*offers Donnie's bo to stave off the bunnies, then runs away before he notices it's gone*
